The Art of Steph Laberis![]() Steph Laberis - professional character designer, illustrator, needle felter and amateur rat wrangler. Quetzal Fledgie commission! I think if I attempt something like this again with long feathers that I will go the wet felting route for added strength and smoother blends. I really hate wet felting though X_x
Sorry for the bad photo quality, I have limited resources right now on vacation! I did manage to squeak out a chickadee Fledgie for my Grandma this week, who herself is quite accomplished with wool! She’ll knit you into a stupor, or at the least she will knit you something amazing, and she’s kept me stocked in hats. So, since the chickadee is the state bird and she’s been asking for a feltie, I figured she’d be iota this!
Owlet Fledgie! Whittling down the remaining commissions from this year, it looks like I will have to do a mini marathon during my Holiday vacation to make all of my deadlines, but it’s cool. Better to make these in front of the fireplace with family than staying up until 1 am on work nights and stabbing my fingers in a sleep-ridden haze.
The second of 3 Fledgies in this series! He is much more quiet and easy going than his cockatoo counterpart and his name is Pweep, I reckon.
The first of a few Fledgies (feltie + fledgling = Fledgie!) I am making for an upcoming show. Also, the doodles that inspired him. :)
I made Marcus a baby brother! His name is Razzie. I used a much slimmer pattern for him than Marcus and though the long fur hides it, he’s got fingers, which Marcus lacks. I also threw in a more flattering pic of Marcus, he felt like he got shafted in the Razzie photos. Plus, a doodle I did while taking my puppet performance for TV class. Story time!
When you perform for TV, you see your puppet in real-time on a live TV monitor. The monitor isn’t like looking in a mirror, it’s like a backwards mirror. You move left, it looks like you went right, etc. I really struggled with the backwards-ness of the monitor and almost always botched my choreography and the puppet would lose his focus with the camera/viewer. My instructor would call out “PUPILS!” to me quite a bit to correct me, but I would end up making things worse by turning the puppet the wrong way and over correcting, etc. It was a hot mess. Mind you, I did lousy in my dance classes as a kid, and those had proper mirrors with no image flipping. I am not cut out for this biz.
Photo creds for the in-progress shot go to Mayka Mei, btw :D
I had *just* enough grey wool left to complete another Baby Appa, so here he is! The other two in this batch are at the mercy of the postal service to bring them their belly-completing wool. This one is extra special to me, partly because he’s in a different pose than usual and partly because he is going to someone who worked on the A:TLAB. That’s when fan art feels really, really special to me :)
I hope his new masters like him - a sky bison is a friend for life.
Baby Appa felties, in their larval forms! Waiting on some wool I ordered for the belly, so for now, they sit in their limbless state. I don’t think they’re too bothered by it, honestly.
I started today with waking up, stretching and accidentally punching myself in the mouth and giving myself a bloody lip. Hopefully the completion of this feltie will make my day go better. X_x
There is a tutorial on the horizon on how to make these by the way ;)
Rat feltie from start to finish :)
